Flu and Stomach Bug: Hospitals Impose Visitor Ban - Lusatia hospitals halt visits as viral outbreaks surge across the region

Two hospitals in Lusatia have stopped most visits due to a sharp rise in viral illnesses. The restrictions come as gastrointestinal infections and influenza spread rapidly across the region. Both facilities, the Lusatia Clinic in Forst and the Naemi Wilke Diakonie Hospital in Guben, are now limiting access to protect patients and staff.

The Lusatia Clinic has paused visits until February 6, while the Naemi Wilke Diakonie Hospital first barred visitors on January 30 and has now extended the ban through February 7. Exceptions will only be made in urgent cases, and even then, prior approval is required.

Patients can still receive personal items from family or friends. But general visiting remains off-limits as hospitals try to contain the outbreaks. Health experts warn that people who have recovered may still carry the virus for days after symptoms fade.

While Brandenburg lacks detailed year-on-year infection data, neighbouring Thuringia has reported a steep climb in cases. Norovirus infections nearly doubled from 3,800 in 2024 to 7,400 in 2025. Rotavirus cases also rose by a third, jumping from 1,700 to 2,200 over the same period.

Medical professionals are urging stronger hand hygiene and reduced contact with anyone showing signs of illness. The measures aim to slow the spread and ease pressure on healthcare services.

The visiting bans at both hospitals will stay in place for at least another week. Staff continue to monitor infection rates closely before deciding on further steps. For now, only essential visits with prior arrangement will be permitted.
