New Speed Limit 30 Rules in Mainz - Mainz scales back 30 km/h zones after legal battles over noise limits

Mainz has adjusted its plans for 30 km/h speed limits after legal challenges and council debates. The city originally introduced these limits in October 2024 to reduce noise affecting around 5,000 residents. However, recent decisions have scaled back some of the restrictions.

The city council first approved the noise action plan in October 2024, which included recommendations for permanent 30 km/h zones. The move aimed to lower excessive noise levels in residential areas. But a legal challenge later paused the limits, arguing they were based on nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels rather than noise concerns.

The Legal Affairs Committee has now upheld the 30 km/h restrictions on Parcusstraße and Kaiserstraße. However, it modified the rules for Rheinachse, limiting the speed reduction to night-time hours—from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM instead of 24/7.

Janina Steinkrüger, the city's environmental and mobility commissioner from the Green Party, criticised the committee's decision. She argued that travel time had been prioritised over residents' health. Steinkrüger had pushed for broader 30 km/h zones but faced resistance in the final ruling.

The revised speed limits mean some roads will no longer have round-the-clock restrictions. Parcusstraße and Kaiserstraße will keep their 30 km/h zones, while Rheinachse's limits now apply only at night. The changes follow legal disputes and differing views on balancing traffic flow with noise reduction.
