Man Fractures Larynx After Suppressing a Sneeze by Pinching His Nose

A young man fractured his larynx after trying to stifle a sneeze by pinching his nose shut. The rare injury happened when the force of the suppressed sneeze ruptured connective tissues in his throat. He was rushed to Pushkino Hospital in the Moscow region for urgent treatment. The incident began when the man blocked his nose and exhaled sharply to stop a sneeze. He immediately heard a cracking noise in his throat, followed by swelling in his neck and face. Doctors later confirmed a fracture in the cartilaginous part of his larynx, along with subcutaneous emphysema—a condition where air leaks into tissues under the skin.

During his week-long hospital stay, the patient was placed on hormonal medications and antibiotics. Strict bed rest was enforced to help the damaged tissues recover. Medical staff also instructed him to avoid coughing or sneezing, though he was allowed to speak.

Specialists have long warned about the dangers of suppressing sneezes. The sudden pressure can cause injuries to the larynx, ears, blood vessels, sinuses, and even the eyes. In this case, the man’s attempt to hold back the sneeze resulted in a serious throat injury requiring intensive care. After about a week of treatment, the patient was discharged from the hospital. His recovery involved avoiding any strain on his throat while the fractures healed. The case serves as a reminder of how forcibly stifling a sneeze can lead to unexpected and severe physical harm.
