A new study reveals that many plant-based milk alternatives in Austria fall short of nutritional standards. The research, conducted by SIPCAN, found that one in three products failed to meet guidelines for sugar, fat, and additives. While demand for these alternatives has surged globally, not all options offer the same health benefits.

The global market for plant-based milks has expanded rapidly over the past five years. Countries like the US, UK, and Germany have seen the highest growth, driven by consumers seeking natural alternatives. Yet, not all products deliver on nutritional promises.

Drinkable milk alternatives fared better than spoonable versions in the study. Around 90% of drinkable options met SIPCAN's standards, compared to just 25% of thicker, spoonable products. Oat and almond milks performed particularly well, with 85% passing all criteria. Oat milks averaged 4.3 grams of sugar and 1.9 grams of fat per 100ml, while almond milks contained 2.1 grams of sugar and 2.1 grams of fat. Coconut-based alternatives, however, struggled. Only 12% met SIPCAN's requirements, largely due to high sugar and fat levels. These products averaged 7.1 grams of sugar and 6.5 grams of fat per 100ml. The study advises consumers to carefully check nutrition labels and ingredient lists when choosing plant-based milks.

The findings highlight significant differences in the nutritional quality of plant-based milks. While oat and almond options generally meet health standards, coconut-based products often contain excessive sugar and fat. Consumers are urged to review labels to make informed choices about these alternatives.
