Maritime Pine Bark Extract, derived from the bark of Pinus pinaster, has been studied for its vascular and cognitive benefits since the 1960s. The extract's active compounds, known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), act as powerful antioxidants and vasodilators, improving blood flow and protecting blood vessels.

The OPCs in Maritime Pine Bark Extract work by stimulating nitric oxide synthase in the vascular lining. This boosts nitric oxide production, a molecule that relaxes arterial walls, widens blood vessels, and lowers resistance against the heart's pumping action. As a result, more oxygenated blood reaches neural tissue, while glucose availability for energy metabolism also increases.

Nitric oxide is vulnerable to breakdown by superoxide radicals, but the extract's antioxidants shield it, helping maintain healthy vascular function. Over time, this protection supports long-term vascular health while also delivering immediate improvements in cerebral perfusion. Based on the findings, it offers personalised supplementation recommendations to support brain health.

The extract's dual action—antioxidant defence and nitric oxide preservation—helps sustain both short-term and long-term vascular function. By improving cerebral blood flow, it may counter cognitive decline linked to reduced perfusion. Research continues to explore its potential for maintaining brain health in ageing populations.
