Matt Damon's gluten-free diet secret for The Odyssey role revealed

Matt Damon recently shared how he lost weight for his upcoming film The Odyssey. On the New Heights podcast, he revealed that cutting gluten helped him reach 167 pounds—a weight he hadn't seen since high school. Director Christopher Nolan wanted the actor to appear 'lean but strong' for the role.

Damon's approach involved removing gluten from his diet. This change helped reduce his intake of refined grains, which often slow down weight loss. However, experts warn that simply cutting out gluten is not a guaranteed way to shed pounds.

A 2020 study published in Gastroenterology tracked 800 healthy adults in Italy over five years. Those on a gluten-free diet gained an average of 1.5 kg, likely due to the higher calorie content in many gluten-free products. Without careful planning, going gluten-free can also lead to nutritional gaps or an unbalanced diet.

For sustainable weight loss, nutritionists emphasise a broader focus. Key factors include eating patterns, portion control, food quality, physical activity, and building healthy habits. A balanced diet should still include complex carbohydrates, protein, fibre, and even whole grains—whether gluten-free or not.

Damon's weight loss for The Odyssey highlights how dietary adjustments can support specific goals. Yet research shows that gluten-free diets do not automatically lead to weight loss. Long-term success depends on overall eating habits, not just eliminating one ingredient.
