Mika the polar bear returns to outdoor enclosure after toe surgery recovery

Mika, the one-year-old polar bear at Karlsruhe Zoo, has returned to his outdoor enclosure after a six-week recovery. The young bear underwent surgery to amputate a damaged toe and has since shown steady improvement in his health.

Mika's injury required the amputation of one of his toes. Following the procedure, he remained under medical care with his mother, Nuka, for around six weeks. During this time, zoo staff monitored his progress closely.

The bear has responded well to treatment, with the wound healing as expected. He is currently receiving pain relief and antibiotics to support his recovery. In June 2023, Mika was finally allowed back into the small outdoor area alongside Nuka. Vets report that Mika has recovered smoothly from the anaesthesia and is showing no signs of complications. His return to the enclosure marks a positive step in his rehabilitation.

Mika continues to receive medication as part of his ongoing care. The zoo's team remains optimistic about his long-term health. His successful return to the outdoor space allows visitors to see him again after weeks of treatment.
