Murang'a Launches Kenya's Largest Digital Healthcare Network for Rural Residents

Murang'a County has rolled out Kenya’s largest public digital healthcare programme. The initiative aims to improve medical access for nearly 1.2 million residents, most of whom live in rural areas. Officials launched the system on 28 May 2026 at the county’s telemedicine hub. The programme connects 170 health facilities through Paratus Kenya’s Essential Access platform, powered by Starlink satellite technology. By the end of the year, another 302 sites are set to join the network. The system combines telemedicine with digital health reporting, allowing specialist consultations and remote data submission.

Currently, the platform supports hundreds of daily consultations, with capacity for 450 to 600 patients each day. Residents will benefit from faster diagnoses, reduced travel costs, and better referrals to specialists. The initiative also strengthens disease monitoring and overall service delivery across the county. This project is part of Murang'a’s wider healthcare transformation under Governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata. It aligns with Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage goals and the national push for digital healthcare solutions.

The new system is designed to cut waiting times and improve access to specialist care. With nearly 500 facilities expected online by year-end, the programme will serve a large rural population. Officials anticipate long-term improvements in patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency.
