Every Day is a Dangerous Moment - Muriel Baumeister opens up about her decade-long sobriety journey
Actress Muriel Baumeister has spoken openly about her long battle with alcohol addiction. Nearly a decade after getting sober, she reflects on the struggles that once dominated her life. Her journey includes failed rehab attempts, a critical legal incident, and a turning point that finally led to recovery.
Baumeister's addiction developed slowly over years. A bout of prenatal depression in 2014 worsened her drinking, though she didn't recognise the severity at the time. In October 2016, she was stopped by police with a blood alcohol level of 1.4 permille—more than three times the legal limit—while her young daughter was in the car. She later admitted she hadn't realised how intoxicated she was that night.
Earlier efforts to quit had failed. Two inpatient rehab stays ended with her still hoping to drink in moderation. The breakthrough came in 2017, when a close friend intervened and she entered Berlin's Charité hospital for a third attempt. This time, the treatment worked. Since then, Baumeister has rebuilt her life around sobriety. Now 54, she remains active in the entertainment industry but notes a double standard: she believes women face harsher judgement for addiction than men do. Today, she shares her story in public discussions, including talks with organisations like SEKIZ e.V., where she speaks candidly about her past and recovery.
Baumeister has been sober for almost ten years. Her career continues, but her focus has shifted to advocacy and reflection. By speaking openly, she aims to challenge stigma and support others facing similar battles.
