Mushroom-Beef Blend Wins Over South Carolina Schoolkids in Taste Tests
A new type of blended meat has won over young students in South Carolina. In school tastings, children overwhelmingly preferred meatballs and burgers made by Joyn Foods over traditional beef. The company's product mixes beef with mushrooms and mycelium to create a more sustainable and nutritious fiber foods alternative.
Joyn Foods grows mycelium on organic waste from farms, turning sidestreams into food in just eight days. This process is far quicker than raising cattle, which takes over a year, or growing soybeans, which requires around four months. The result is a blended meat that uses 95% less land and 99% less water than conventional beef.
The product has already passed a key test with schoolchildren. In Berkeley County, 96% of K-12 students approved Joyn Foods' meatballs, while 92% liked the burgers. Even younger pupils in grades K-2 gave an 84% approval rating. These tastings suggest the blended meat could be a hit in school cafeterias.
Beyond taste, the blended meat offers health benefits. It contains less saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium than regular beef. At the same time, it provides complete protein, dietary fiber, and essential nutrients like potassium, iron, calcium, and vitamin D.
The company's success in South Carolina has opened further opportunities. Joyn Foods is now approved for the state's Purchasing Alliance bid, meaning all school districts can buy its products. With the National School Lunch Program serving 30 million meals daily, schools are among the biggest buyers of ground beef in the US.
Joyn Foods' blended meat has proven popular with students while offering clear environmental and nutritional advantages. The product's approval for statewide school purchases could mark a shift in how schools source beef. If adopted widely, it may help reduce the climate impact of school meals across the country.
