National Academies Release Blueprint to Boost Breastfeeding Support Nationwide

A new report from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine outlines clear steps to improve breastfeeding support across the US. The study brings together expert recommendations aimed at helping families, workplaces, and healthcare systems better assist nursing parents. The roadmap was developed by a panel of 15 national experts, including Diane L. Spatz, the Helen M. Shearer Professor of Nutrition and Professor of Perinatal Nursing. Their work highlights key areas where change is needed.

The report calls for stronger national coordination to align policies and programs. It also recommends expanding public health initiatives that promote breastfeeding education and access. Healthcare strategies must be updated to ensure consistent, evidence-based support for new parents. In addition, the experts stress the importance of insurance coverage for lactation services and supplies. Workplace policies should also adapt to provide better accommodation for employees who breastfeed or express milk.
