The Nizhny Novgorod Region has been named the best in Russia for school meal quality, scoring 4.3 out of 5 in student satisfaction. The ranking comes after a nationwide assessment involving thousands of schools and pupils. Other top regions include North Ossetia–Alania and the Sakhalin Region, reflecting varied success in improving school nutrition.
The results were part of the Healthy Olympics, a competition that evaluated school meal standards across 88 Russian regions. Over 223,000 students from more than 5,800 schools took part in the assessment. School No. 3 in Dzerzhinsk secured the top prize of 1 million rubles for its outstanding performance in the event.
In addition to the competition, a nutrition education center was launched at a school in Dzerzhinsk. The facility aims to teach students about healthy eating habits and food preparation. While national data shows gradual improvements in school meal quality due to federal programs, no specific studies compare Nizhny Novgorod's progress to other regions over the past five years.
Regional differences in meal standards remain, with some areas outperforming others. The top five regions for satisfaction also featured North Ossetia–Alania and Sakhalin, highlighting pockets of excellence in school catering.
The Healthy Olympics recognized Nizhny Novgorod as a leader in school meal quality, with a satisfaction score of 4.3 out of 5.
