Nizhny Novgorod warns of 'mouse fever' as summer dacha season begins

Health officials in Nizhny Novgorod have issued a warning about hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), commonly called 'mouse fever'. The alert comes as residents prepare to return to dachas and summer homes after winter. Authorities stress the need for precautions to avoid infection from rodents, the disease's main carriers. Rodents often seek shelter in dachas, sheds, and private homes during cold months. As temperatures rise, these animals remain active, increasing the risk of HFRS transmission to humans. Natalya Sadykova, deputy chief state sanitary doctor for the region, highlighted the importance of preventing rodent infestations to lower infection risks.

Before moving into seasonal homes, experts advise thorough ventilation followed by a damp clean. Wearing respiratory protection, such as masks, is also recommended to avoid inhaling dust or pathogens. Regular waste disposal, building maintenance, and removing potential nesting sites for mice are further steps to reduce risks. Symptoms of HFRS that require urgent medical care include high fever, intense headaches, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and pain in the lower back or joints. Despite these warnings, no confirmed cases of HFRS have been reported in the Nizhny Novgorod region over the past five years.

The reminder targets owners of private homes and dachas, where rodents frequently overwinter. Proper cleaning and maintenance remain key to preventing HFRS outbreaks. Officials continue to monitor the situation as the seasonal return to summer properties begins.
