North India's New Geriatric Hub Takes Shape at BHU's Medical Campus

A new National Centre for Aging is under construction at Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Medical Sciences campus. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 150 crore, aims to provide advanced healthcare for elderly patients across North India. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently visited the site to review progress. The 200-bed facility will serve as the third such centre in India and a key geriatric healthcare hub in North India. It will offer specialist services, including a Memory Clinic, an Arthritis Clinic, and a multi-specialty geriatric outpatient department.

Modern amenities will include modular operation theatres, advanced radiology and diagnostic services, rehabilitation services, a day-care centre, an ICU, and private wards. The centre will also focus on research into age-related diseases and develop treatment protocols for elderly patients.

During his inspection, the Chief Minister instructed officials to complete the project on time while maintaining high-quality standards. He also emphasised its role in capacity building and human resource development in geriatric medicine. Once operational, the centre will provide modern healthcare and specialist services to elderly patients from Purvanchal and beyond. It will also contribute to research and training in geriatric care. The facility is expected to significantly improve healthcare access for older adults in the region.
