North Rhine-Westphalia extends its nursing education mediation body for four more years
North Rhine-Westphalia will retain its independent mediation body for nursing education disputes for another four years. The Ombuds Office for Nursing Education, established in 2020, provides free and confidential support to trainees and training providers. Its services remain voluntary, with no legal obligation to follow its recommendations. The Ombuds Office was created under the Nursing Profession Act and operates from the Münster District Government. Since its founding, Prof. Dr. Barbara Knigge-Demal has served as an ombudswoman, helping shape the office’s role and processes.
Trainees facing conflicts with practical training providers or nursing schools can reach out to the office. Once a case is recorded, it is assigned to one of the ombudspersons for potential solutions or mediation. The current team includes Brigitte von Germeten-Ortmann, Ludger Risse, Thomas Kreutz, and Kerstin Schönlau, each bringing specialised experience in nursing and education.
The office aims to resolve disputes early, allowing trainees to continue their education without disruption. It also identifies structural issues in nursing education and works to initiate improvements. Ombudspersons serve four-year terms on a voluntary basis, offering expert consultations and mediation. The appointment of new ombudspersons ensures the office’s continued operation. Its work remains focused on early conflict resolution and supporting trainees. The service stays independent, confidential, and free of charge for all parties involved.
