Oak Park's hospital closure leaves residents scrambling for emergency care
West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park shut down abruptly in March 2023. The closure has left local residents without a nearby emergency room, sparking concerns over longer response times in medical emergencies. Community leaders and healthcare providers are now pushing for its reopening.
The hospital’s operations stopped in late March, except for a few clinic and testing services. At the time, hospital leaders aimed to reopen by June 2023. However, a settlement conference held on May 29, 2023, failed to set a new timeline for restarting full services.
The closure has forced patients to travel further for urgent care. The nearest alternative, Loretto Hospital, is roughly two miles away. Rev. Ira Acree, pastor of Greater St John Bible Church of Chicago, has been organising rallies to demand the hospital’s return. His wife recently faced a medical issue, requiring a 20-minute journey to the hospital—something he blames on West Suburban’s shutdown. Financial troubles add to the uncertainty. The owners of West Suburban and Weiss Memorial Hospital owe at least £8.9 million in unpaid property taxes for 2024 and 2025. Dr. Paul Luning, CEO of PCC Community Wellness Center, warned that a 15-minute delay in emergencies can be critical. As of Monday, the emergency room remains closed.
The hospital’s future stays unclear, with no confirmed date for reopening. Residents continue to rely on distant facilities for emergency treatment. The financial and operational challenges mean the community may face prolonged disruptions to local healthcare.
