The study examined how individuals organise complex, multi-step behaviours—an area where OCD symptoms often appear. Participants with OCD performed the tasks accurately, but their brains showed increased activity across multiple regions. Areas linked to working memory, language processing, and visual object recognition were particularly overactive.
This heightened 'neural cost' suggests that OCD patients rely on extra brain resources to achieve the same results as others. Researchers believe targeting these newly identified regions with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) might improve treatment outcomes. However, the study did not specify which exact brain areas were involved beyond those typically associated with OCD, such as the orbitofrontal cortex or anterior cingulate.
The findings highlight a measurable difference in how OCD affects brain function during structured tasks.
