Palisades fire survivor Larry Vein dies by suicide after leading recovery efforts

Larry Vein, a 61-year-old entrepreneur and Palisades fire survivor, has died. His death was ruled a suicide by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office on April 27, 2025. Known for his energetic optimism, Vein played a key role in supporting his community after the devastating January 2025 firestorm.

Vein became a prominent figure during the recovery efforts following the Palisades fire. He provided regular informational updates and founded the Pali Strong Foundation to streamline recovery details and create a virtual space for survivors. His work earned him a $500,000 grant to develop a social platform, though the project later sparked controversy.

After his death, tributes poured in from local leaders, including Col. Eric Swenson and L.A. City Councilmember Traci Park. His brother, Jon Vein, received hundreds of calls from community members grateful for Larry’s support. Research indicates that wildfire survivors face higher risks of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, particularly in the second year of recovery. A memorial celebration will be held at the Palisades Recreation Center on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Vein’s death has left a mark on the Palisades community and beyond. His efforts to connect and support survivors highlighted the long-term challenges faced by those recovering from disasters. The memorial service will offer a chance for many to honour his contributions.
