Part-time vicar tackles his first half Ironman to honor seniors and faith

The Rev. Bryan Beard, a part-time vicar and full-time Avis employee, is preparing for his first half Ironman on March 15. The gruelling race covers 70.3 miles of swimming, biking, and running. Alongside his training, he is raising funds for Saint Simeon's Senior Community in Tulsa, Oklahoma—an effort close to his heart.

Beard's journey began two years ago when he decided to improve his health and take on a new challenge. He started with short walks and indoor cycling, gradually building up to running, swimming, and longer bike rides. Over time, he completed an Olympic-distance triathlon and a half marathon to test his progress.

Training has not been without its hurdles. Beard admits swimming is the toughest part, as technique plays a crucial role in endurance. Yet, his daily routine of prayer and physical activity keeps him focused. Morning and Evening Prayer, he says, have strengthened his mental resilience for the race.

His motivation runs deeper than personal achievement. Watching his parents care for his grandmother with Alzheimer's inspired him to support Saint Simeon's, a senior living community. To contribute, he set up a fundraising page where donors can pledge per mile or give a fixed amount.

The half Ironman on March 15 marks the culmination of Beard's two-year training effort. His performance will test both his physical and mental preparation. Meanwhile, his fundraising continues to benefit Saint Simeon's Senior Community, reflecting his commitment to health and service.
