Philippines activates Code White Alert for Holy Week 2026 health risks
The Department of Health (DOH) has raised a Code White Alert nationwide from March 30 to April 6, 2026, covering the entire Holy Week period. This move comes as authorities prepare for increased medical demands during one of the busiest religious seasons in the Philippines. Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday (March 29) to Easter Sunday (April 5), with millions of Filipinos participating in traditional activities. These include Visita Iglesia, Stations of the Cross, processions, and self-flagellation, which often lead to heat exposure and minor injuries.
Under the **Code White Alert**, all DOH hospitals must keep **24/7 emergency teams, medical supplies, and emergency rooms** on standby. The public has been advised to take extra precautions, such as **wearing loose, light-coloured clothing** and **avoiding direct sunlight between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.** The DOH also recommends **drinking seven to eight glasses of water daily**, unless medically restricted. The alert aims to ensure quick responses to heat-related illnesses, dehydration, and other emergencies during the week-long observance.
The Code White Alert remains in effect until April 6, a day after Easter Sunday. Hospitals and health teams are on full standby, while the public is reminded to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure. The DOH's measures are designed to reduce risks during the busy religious season.
