SEK Deployment in Duisburg: Man Shot with Knife - Police shoot armed man after standoff at German mental health facility
A police operation at a mental health facility in Duisburg ended with a man being shot and wounded. Officers were called early in the morning after reports of an armed individual barricaded in the attic. The incident involved a tactical unit and resulted in injuries to both the suspect and a responding officer.
The situation began at around 8:00 a.m. when police received reports of a man allegedly armed with a knife inside the residential facility. Upon arrival, officers attempted to engage with the suspect, who had locked himself in the attic. One of the first responders suffered minor injuries during the confrontation.
Specialist units, including the SEK (special operations command), were deployed to handle the standoff. Using a fire department ladder truck, officers made contact with the man through an attic window. At some point during the operation, police opened fire, wounding the suspect.
The exact circumstances leading to the use of firearms remain unclear. The injured man was later taken to hospital for treatment. Data shows that Tasers were used 1,171 times by German police between 2021 and 2023, with around 254 people in 2023 subsequently placed under involuntary psychiatric commitment.
The wounded suspect is now receiving medical care. Authorities will likely review the incident, including the decision to deploy lethal force. The injured officer is also expected to recover from their minor wounds.
