Polish Woman Dies of Starvation in Bali After Extreme Fruit-Only Diet
A 27-year-old woman from Poland has died of starvation in a Bali hotel while following an extreme diet. Karolina Krzyzak, who weighed just three-and-a-half stone at the time of her death, had been eating only fruit in the weeks leading up to the tragedy. Her body was discovered after another guest raised concerns with hotel staff. Karolina Krzyzak arrived at the hotel in a visibly weakened state. Staff immediately noticed her frail appearance and offered medical help on multiple occasions. She refused each time.
Over the following days, her condition worsened. Staff reportedly had to assist her in turning over in bed as she grew too weak to move. Despite their concerns, she continued to reject food and medical support. Krzyzak had been following a 'fruitarian' diet, which consists almost entirely of raw fruit. Nutrition experts warn that such diets are highly dangerous, as fruit alone cannot provide the body with essential nutrients. A balanced diet should include no more than 25 to 30 percent fruit. The extreme restriction led to severe malnourishment, ultimately causing her death. A fellow guest eventually alerted hotel staff after noticing Krzyzak had not been seen for some time. When staff checked her room, they found her unresponsive.
The case has highlighted the severe risks of extreme dietary restrictions. Those struggling with eating disorders or unhealthy eating patterns can seek help from BEAT Eating Disorders, which offers support through its helpline at 0808 801 0677. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Krzyzak’s death.
