Prince William visited the University of Bristol to explore cutting-edge technologies aimed at improving health and sustainability. His tour included stops at a robotics lab, a supercomputing facility, and a company tackling microplastic pollution—an issue he has personally addressed at home.

At the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, the prince tested a three-wheeled seated mobility scooter designed for rough terrain. He remarked on its smooth handling and admitted a liking for faster models. The lab also displayed an exoskeleton to aid those with mobility issues and smart socks that monitor stress levels in dementia patients, alerting carers before distress escalates.

Many of the lab’s inventions focus on supporting an ageing population. Researchers aim to help people maintain independence and dignity through assistive technologies. Later, Prince William visited Matter, a company producing washing machine filters to trap microplastics. During a demonstration, he was visibly surprised by the volume of plastic fibres collected after just ten wash cycles. The prince and Princess Kate have already installed one of these filters in their own home. His final stop was Isambard-AI, the UK’s most powerful supercomputer. The system accelerates research into climate change, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and cancer treatments.

The visit highlighted innovations addressing both environmental and healthcare challenges. Prince William’s engagement with these projects reflects growing interest in practical solutions for sustainability and ageing populations. The technologies he observed are either in development or already being adopted in homes and medical settings.
