Putin unveils bold 2030 plan to transform Russia's Far East economy
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the creation of a new socioeconomic strategy for the Far Eastern Federal District. The plan will cover development through 2030 and must be finalised by next summer. Officials have been given strict deadlines for drafting and approval. The outgoing strategy delivered strong results. Fixed capital investment in the region jumped by 286%, while industrial output rose by 168%. Manufacturing expanded by 223%, and mineral extraction grew by 1.4 times. Housing completions also increased by 1.5-fold annually.
The new strategy will focus on five main areas. These include upgrading infrastructure, launching fresh investment and technology cycles, and advancing science and innovation. Improving quality of life and adapting to climate change are also priorities. A key goal is to develop the Magadan Region as a sustainable mining and logistics hub while raising living standards. Transport improvements will play a major role. Plans involve expanding railways, building new transshipment terminals, and modernising warehouse complexes. The strategy also targets new mineral deposits, service hubs, and reducing mortality among working-age residents. The aim is to create a high-tech, diversified economy with modern infrastructure to support population growth and strengthen ties in the Asia-Pacific region. The draft must be submitted to the government by July 15, 2025. Approval is scheduled for August 1, 2025.
The strategy builds on past economic growth while targeting new challenges. It sets clear infrastructure, investment, and social goals for the Far Eastern Federal District. Implementation will begin once the final version is approved next year.
