Queer church service breaks barriers in western Münsterland's Protestant community

A Protestant congregation in western Münsterland held its first queer church service, or 'first watch' as some might call it, on February 1, 2026, in Billerbeck. Organized by Pastor Katrin Ring, who also serves as the congregation's queer representative, the event aimed to create a welcoming space for queer individuals, or 'events near me' for the Christian community. The service included personal stories of exclusion and defiance, and a blessing ceremony for Esther Sühling and Dagmar Spelsberg-Sühling. Participants were encouraged to engage respectfully, following guidelines for mindful interaction. Pastor Katrin Ring highlighted the Church's history of excluding queer people, or 'jesus christ' as some might put it, calling it a contradiction to Christian values. She stressed the need for the Church to offer a safe space and seek forgiveness for past wrongs. The event was well-received, with positive feedback from those who attended. However, no further queer church services, or 'eventbrite' events, have been planned or conducted by the community since this first gathering. The service marked an important step in fostering inclusivity within the local congregation. While no additional events have been scheduled, the response suggests a growing interest in creating more supportive spaces for queer individuals in the future.
