Regensburg's Schools Embrace Organic Farming Through Hands-On Classroom Lessons
A local initiative is bringing organic farming into classrooms across Regensburg and its surrounding district. Since 2023, the 'Organic Farmer Goes to School!' project has reached around 3,500 students, teaching them about sustainable food and regional agriculture. The programme has now expanded to include all school types up to 10th grade as of September 2025. The project is part of the Eco-Model Region City.Country.Regensburg, which aims to strengthen organic farming and sustainable food education. Farmers Heidi Ziegaus and Christin Ebenbeck lead the sessions, visiting classrooms up to five times a week. Each interactive lesson lasts 90 minutes, helping students understand where their food comes from.
New thematic toolkits will soon be introduced, focusing on organic beef and grain production. These materials will provide hands-on learning experiences. The Sanddorf Foundation has secured €65,760 in funding to support the project from 2025 to 2028. Currently, 38 schools with 165 classes—70 of them in the district—are taking part. The initiative bridges the gap between farming and education, encouraging students to think about sustainable diets and regional organic products.
The programme continues to grow, offering practical lessons on food sustainability. Schools interested in participating can contact organic farmer Heidi Ziegaus at [email protected]. With ongoing funding and new teaching resources, the project aims to deepen students' understanding of organic agriculture in the region.
