Retiring in Mexico at 50: The Hidden Costs of a Dream Move

At 50, a former pharmacist from the U.S. decided to retire in Ajijic, Mexico, seeking a lower cost of living and a milder climate. The move came after years of struggling with high expenses in San Francisco. But the transition proved harder than expected, with unexpected costs and cultural adjustments shaping the first year abroad.

The decision to relocate began in late 2022, when securing a visa appointment in San Francisco became impossible. Forced to travel to Laredo, Texas, the retiree finally obtained the necessary paperwork before settling in Ajijic. The town’s affordability, pleasant weather, and proximity to family in California made it an appealing choice.

Early challenges included overpaying for goods and services due to the so-called *gringo tax*—a common experience for foreigners unfamiliar with local pricing. Limited Spanish skills and a lack of knowledge about Mexican customs added to the financial strain. Exchange rate fluctuations also hit hard, increasing living costs in dollar terms and squeezing the retirement budget. Housing proved another hurdle. After paying a full year’s rent upfront for a house, the retiree discovered loud street festivals and other disruptions made the location unsuitable. Terminating the lease early meant losing part of the prepaid rent. The lesson led to a more cautious approach: a second attempt resulted in buying a home in a quieter neighbourhood. Family emergencies added further stress. Two unplanned trips back to San Francisco in the first six months drained savings faster than anticipated. To better manage finances, the retiree switched to Wise for international transfers, securing mid-market rates and reducing fees.

The first year in Mexico brought unexpected costs and setbacks, but also valuable lessons. Adjusting to local pricing, finding stable housing, and using cost-effective financial tools helped stabilise the retirement plan. With a clearer strategy in place, the move now looks more sustainable for the long term.
