Russia Proposes Free Postpartum Rehabilitation for New Mothers Under State Insurance

A new proposal could expand healthcare support for new mothers in Russia. Sergei Leonov, head of the State Duma’s Health Protection Committee, wants postpartum rehabilitation added to the country’s mandatory health insurance (MHI) system. He argues that early recovery support is more effective than treating long-term health issues later on. The MHI system in Russia is funded by contributions from workers or their employers. These payments go into the mandatory medical insurance fund, which covers essential healthcare services.

Leonov’s plan focuses on helping women recover after childbirth. His proposal includes health restoration programmes designed for mothers and their newborns. According to him, state-funded rehabilitation would prevent more serious health problems down the line. He stressed that addressing recovery early is better than relying on antidepressants or other treatments for later complications. The aim is to provide structured support during a critical period for new mothers.

If approved, the change would make postpartum rehabilitation a standard part of Russia’s MHI coverage. Women would gain access to recovery services without extra costs. The move could also reduce the need for long-term medical interventions after childbirth.
