Russia's Volga Forum unites experts to combat sudden cardiac death

The first Volga Federal District Arrhythmology Forum recently wrapped up in Nizhny Novgorod. The event brought together more than 450 medical experts to tackle cardiovascular diseases, with a special focus on preventing sudden cardiac death. Attendees included 250 professionals in person and another 200 joining online.

The forum was organised by the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Ministry of Health alongside several medical institutions. Its goal was to unite different medical specialties in the fight against heart conditions, particularly those leading to sudden cardiac death. Discussions covered key areas such as clinical and interventional arrhythmology, sports cardiology, and the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

This event aligns with Russia's *Long and Active Life* national project, which seeks to raise life expectancy by 2030 through healthcare upgrades and new technologies. The Nizhny Novgorod region has already made progress, performing over 1,600 arrhythmia surgeries by late 2025. It has also surpassed the national average for implanting antiarrhythmic devices. To further improve care, the region introduced a new outpatient monitoring centre. It also opened advanced primary vascular units and regional vascular centres. These developments reflect a broader trend, as at least 12 Russian regions—including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Tatarstan—have hosted similar forums since 2023. Moscow and Saint Petersburg have been especially active, holding five and four events respectively by early 2026.

The forum highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise cardiac care across Russia. With new facilities and increased surgical capacity, the Nizhny Novgorod region is strengthening its ability to treat heart conditions. The event also reinforced collaboration among medical professionals in addressing cardiovascular diseases.
