A new joint treatment developed by traumatologists in Nizhny Novgorod is spreading across Russia. The technique uses a special gel to repair cartilage damage and ease pain without metal implants. Younger patients, in particular, are benefiting from this approach as severe injuries become more common in those under 40. The method works by injecting a hydrocolloid gel into the damaged joint. Once inside, the gel hardens but stays flexible, helping to restore movement and reduce discomfort. Doctors say it can delay or even avoid the need for artificial joint replacements.
Medical teams from Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, and the Far East have already visited Nizhny Novgorod to learn the procedure. Specialists from the renowned Ilizarov Center also travelled to study the technique firsthand. The treatment is now being adopted nationwide, with growing interest from clinics across the country.
The gel-based method offers a less invasive alternative to traditional joint surgery. It is proving especially useful for younger patients, who often face longer recovery times with standard treatments. As more hospitals adopt the approach, its use is expected to keep expanding in the coming years.
