Russian scientists unlock healing power of Siberian plants for new drugs

Scientists at Tomsk State University are working on new ways to extract valuable compounds from local plants. The project focuses on blueberries, blackcurrants, and pine needles—raw materials rich in vitamins and beneficial chemicals. These substances could help develop drugs for infections and cancer.

The team aims to create technologies for extracting antioxidants, triterpenic acids, and labdane alcohols. These compounds are known for their effectiveness against harmful microorganisms and their role in disease prevention. However, challenges remain, including low bioavailability, poor solubility, and instability during digestion.

An interdisciplinary group of chemists, molecular biologists, and immunologists is tackling these issues. Their goal is to develop targeted delivery systems that improve how these substances are absorbed by the body. The project is backed by the 'Priority 2030' programme and involves partnerships with local producers 'Solagift' and 'SAVA'. The research is set to conclude by the end of 2025. If successful, it could lead to new drug formulations with better efficiency and fewer side effects.

The project’s findings may provide a foundation for advanced medical treatments. By improving the extraction and delivery of plant-based compounds, the team hopes to enhance their use in fighting infections and cancer. The results will be shared with industrial partners for potential real-world applications.
