Schiefbahn's New Sports Program Supports Dementia Patients and Families
A new sports program in Schiefbahn is offering support for people with dementia and their families. The initiative combines physical activity with memory training to improve well-being. It is designed to create a welcoming space for participants and their loved ones. The 'Sports with Dementia' program runs every Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Peter-Bäumges-Halle, Jahnstr. 1. Simone Masum, who leads the sessions, has specialised training in neurological rehabilitation and dementia care. The exercises use small balls and light weights, blending movement with memory activities.
Anja Schröter and Simone Masum want the program to provide both physical benefits and social connection. Exercise has been shown to lift mood and reduce feelings of loneliness in people with dementia. Scientific research also suggests that staying active can slow the disease’s progression.
TVS offers additional support for caregivers, including a chance to relax with coffee and pastries in the clubhouse. Karin Oegema from KRUMM & Willich’s Dementia Café will be present to provide advice and answer questions. New participants can book a trial session to experience the program firsthand. The program gives people with dementia a chance to stay active and engaged. Caregivers can also receive support and guidance while their loved ones participate. The initiative is open to anyone interested in trying it out.
