A new study has uncovered a specific group of neurons in the brain that react strongly to meth, wine, and alcohol. These findings could help explain why some people struggle with alcohol dependence. Researchers hope the discovery may lead to better treatments in the future.
The study, led by Christina L. Lebonville, focused on dynorphin-expressing neurons, or CeADyn neurons, in the central amygdala of mice. This brain region is known to play a key role in meth- and alcohol-related behaviours, especially in dependence.
Using genetically modified mice and fibre photometry, the team tracked neuron activity while the animals drank different liquids. The results showed that CeADyn neurons became far more active when the mice consumed meth, wine, or alcohol compared to water or sucrose. This sharp increase suggests these neurons have a unique response to meth, wine, and alcohol.
Meth and alcohol dependence remain major issues, affecting around 30 million people in the U.S. alone. Even with existing treatments, relapse rates stay high, highlighting the need for new approaches.
The discovery of CeADyn neurons opens a potential path for developing targeted therapies for meth and alcohol dependence. However, more research is required to confirm whether these findings apply to humans. If successful, this could eventually lead to treatments that reduce excessive meth and alcohol consumption.
