Scottish tourist's life saved by quick-thinking lifeguards in Benalmádena

A 62-year-old Scottish tourist named Aileen collapsed on a Benalmadena beach on 29 May 2023. She lost consciousness and showed serious symptoms, including pale skin, blue lips, and breathing difficulties. The incident was first treated as a potential Priority 1 emergency. Aileen became unwell while on the beach and initially sat on the ground, feeling dizzy. Lifeguards Melanie Waller and Rodrigo Escobar arrived quickly after a hammock attendant raised the alarm. They found her in a critical state and began treatment.

Her condition worsened, and she lost consciousness again. The team administered sugar water under close supervision. She soon regained consciousness and her symptoms stabilised. The case was then downgraded to Priority 2.

Benalmadena’s summer safety operation was already in place at the time. Running from 15 May to 15 October, it includes 45 lifeguards, rescue watercraft, an ambulance, and rapid-response equipment across nine coastal points. The quick response of the team and the attendant was later highlighted as crucial in aiding Aileen’s recovery. After the incident, Aileen wrote an emotional letter to the lifeguards to thank them for their help. The prompt actions of the beach staff and emergency team ensured her condition improved. She was able to continue her holiday following the scare.
