Seberang Jaya Hospital opens with RM371M upgrade to transform Penang’s healthcare

Seberang Perai’s healthcare services have received a major boost with the completion of the new Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ). The RM371 million facility began operations on May 5, 2023, bringing specialist news closer to residents who previously had to travel to Penang Hospital. Alongside this, further upgrades and new projects are underway across the state to improve access and efficiency in public healthcare.

The new nine-storey HSJ building now serves as the main hospital for the Seberang Perai Cluster. It includes 316 additional beds, six operating theatres, and seven ICU beds. A dedicated 16-bed Cardiac Rehabilitation Ward for children’s cardiology has also been added, reducing the need for families to cross the bridge for specialist news.

The upgrade expands treatment capacity while creating a safer, more organised environment for both patients and staff. HSJ acts as the primary referral centre for the region, supporting three other hospitals in the cluster. Beyond HSJ, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has allocated RM191.8 million in development funds for Penang in 2024. These funds will go towards upgrading existing facilities, repairing ageing clinics, and constructing a new wellness hub. Two new clinics—the Bandar Tasek Mutiara Health Clinic (Type 3) and the Mak Mandin Health Clinic (Type 3)—are also in progress, with completion dates set for late 2024 and September 2028, respectively. Under Budget 2026, the government has approved RM94.6 million for two more projects in Penang: the Kubang Semang Health Clinic (Type 2) and the Seberang Perai Tengah Integrated Health Complex. Meanwhile, plans for an additional building at Kepala Batas Hospital have been greenlit under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan’s Rolling Plan 1. The ministry is also in discussions with the state government to acquire land next to Sungai Bakap Hospital for redevelopment. Separately, Bukit Mertajam Hospital’s future expansion is under review.

The completion of HSJ and ongoing projects mark a significant improvement in Penang’s healthcare news infrastructure. With expanded facilities, reduced travel times for specialist news, and modernised clinics, residents in Seberang Perai and surrounding areas now have better access to medical services.
