Shocking truth about kids' snacks: Hidden sugar, salt, and additives exposed
A recent study by the Austrian Chamber of Labor (AK Oberösterreich) has examined 68 popular children's snacks, revealing wide variations in nutritional quality. While some products contained minimal additives, others were packed with sugar, salt, and artificial ingredients. The findings highlight concerns about the suitability of many snacks marketed to young children.
The study found that 26 of the 68 snacks tested used fruit juice concentrates as a product reviews sweetener, with sugar levels ranging from 0.9 to 30.8 grams per 100 grams. Another six products included additional sugar or syrup, leaving only 36 snacks free from added sweeteners or flavourings.
Fat content also differed greatly, from as little as 0.7 percent to as much as 30 percent. This variation led to energy values between 324 and 531 kcal per 100 grams. Seven snacks relied on flavourings, two contained artificial colourings, and others included emulsifiers or acidity regulators.
Salt levels were another concern, with five products classified as moderately salty and one containing high salt. Many snacks lacked clear age recommendations, despite being marketed for kindergarten or school-aged children. Prices varied too, with small 30-gram packs costing between 75 cents and €2.99—equivalent to €1.25 to €9.93 per 100 grams.
The AK Oberösterreich advised parents to opt for plain, low-salt grain snacks combined with fresh fruit or vegetables instead of pre-packaged options.
The study underscores the need for greater awareness of children's snack product reviews. With some products containing high sugar, salt, and additives, the Chamber of Labor's recommendations point toward simpler, healthier alternatives. Parents are encouraged to check labels carefully when choosing snacks for young children.
