Chronic low-grade inflammation, often silent and undetected, plays a key role in heart disease risk. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is a blood marker used to measure this inflammation, with levels above 3 mg/L signalling a significantly higher chance of heart attacks and strokes. Recent studies confirm its importance—even in people with normal cholesterol—prompting doctors to include it in routine cardiovascular checks alongside lifestyle and medication strategies.

Research over the past two decades, including the JUPITER trial, has shown that elevated hs-CRP levels independently predict major heart problems. A large analysis of over 448,000 participants tracked for 14 years reinforced this link, proving hs-CRP's reliability beyond traditional risk factors. The marker also connects to other inflammatory conditions like gout, psoriasis, and gum disease, further tying chronic inflammation to heart disease progression.

In a study of 1,377 Austrians, 37 percent had hs-CRP levels above 1 mg/L, while 15 percent exceeded the high-risk threshold of 3 mg/L. The same group showed low Omega-3 levels, with 87 percent falling below the ideal 8 percent index—a measure of heart-healthy fatty acids in the blood. Higher Omega-3 levels often correlate with lower inflammation and better cardiovascular health.

Visceral belly fat acts as a major driver of inflammation, releasing pro-inflammatory signals. A waist size over 102 cm (40 inches) in men or 88 cm (35 inches) in women raises metabolic risks. Diet and exercise play a crucial role: processed foods, excess sugar, and trans fats worsen inflammation, while a Mediterranean diet and 150 minutes of weekly activity reduce it. Even modest weight loss—5 to 10 percent of body weight—can significantly lower hs-CRP levels.

Hs-CRP testing is now a recognised tool for assessing heart disease risk, particularly when cholesterol levels appear normal. Lifestyle changes, such as improving diet, increasing physical activity, and managing weight, can directly reduce inflammation and improve long-term cardiovascular outcomes. These measures, combined with monitoring Omega-3 intake and waist circumference, offer practical ways to lower risk.
