Sogang University leads in disability support for fifth consecutive year
Sogang University has once again been recognised as a leader in supporting students with disabilities. For the fifth year running, the Korean government ranked it the top institution for educational welfare in this area. The university’s comprehensive system, known as Dasoni, provides tailored assistance to ensure equal opportunities for all learners. The university’s Support Center for Students with Disabilities oversees services throughout their academic journey. Priority classroom seating, extra exam time, private testing rooms, and note-taking help are standard provisions. Financial aid is also available, with the Xavier Scholarship covering between a third and two-thirds of tuition fees.
Campus accessibility features prominently, including designated parking, ramps, lifts, and automatic doors. Students can borrow assistive devices through the support centre, further reducing barriers to participation. On 8 April 2023, Sogang hosted a Disability Awareness Day event, drawing around twenty attendees. The occasion was organised jointly by Campus Ministry Affairs, the Institute for Global Engagement & Sustainability, and the Support Center for Students with Disabilities. Recently, two students, Han Joo-sung and Yu Min-woo, won the grand prize at the first Lotte Foundation Social Contribution Video Contest. Their winning entry documented the addition of Braille stickers across campus, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve inclusivity.
The university’s consistent top ranking reflects its commitment to accessible education. With dedicated funding, specialised services, and campus-wide adaptations, Sogang ensures students with disabilities receive the support needed to succeed. Initiatives like Disability Awareness Day and student-led projects continue to strengthen this mission.
