Stomach illness strikes Germany's Olympic biathlon team before key races
Stomach problems have disrupted Germany's women's biathlon team at the Olympics. Several athletes, including Janina Hettich-Walz and Vanessa Voigt, have fallen ill in shared lodging. As a precaution, Franziska Preuß has moved into a single room to avoid further spread.
The issue first emerged when Hettich-Walz withdrew from Saturday's sprint event due to stomach symptoms. Voigt still competed but was visibly affected. Preuß, who finished seventh in the sprint, reported no ongoing problems and will race in Sunday's pursuit.
The cause of the illness remains unclear. Both German and Czech athletes staying in the same accommodation have experienced similar symptoms. The German Ski Association's medical team has downplayed concerns, stating the situation is not serious.
This follows a similar incident before the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Four players from Finland's women's ice hockey team suffered gastrointestinal complaints linked to a highly contagious norovirus.
Preuß's move to a single room aims to limit any further spread among the team. She remains on track to compete in the upcoming pursuit event. The medical team continues to monitor the situation closely.
