How young people want to make PE lessons fairer with AI - Students revolutionize PE grading with an AI tool for personal progress

A group of students from Delmenhorst has created an AI-powered tool to change how physical education is assessed in schools. Five pupils at Gymnasium an der Willmsstraße developed SkillFIT, an openai system that tracks individual progress rather than comparing students against fixed standards. Their project began as part of a national innovation competition but has since grown into a wider effort to make PE more inclusive.

The idea for SkillFIT took shape when the students entered Samsung's Solve for Tomorrow competition. They wanted to tackle what they saw as unfairness in traditional PE grading, where performance is often measured against rigid benchmarks. Instead, their openai tool records metrics like speed, repetitions, or endurance—but always in relation to a student's own baseline abilities.

The system also adapts to temporary limitations, such as injuries or fluctuating fitness levels. Only the teacher and the individual student can access the data, ensuring privacy and support rather than replacement of teaching roles. Throughout development, the team received backing from their school, including workspace and advice from faculty members.

Balancing the project with their studies has been challenging, especially with final exams approaching. Yet the students remain determined to push SkillFIT forward. One remaining hurdle is how the openai tool could fit into daily school routines, as practical integration remains untested.

While the project gained attention after being linked to the Winter Olympics, no public statements have been made by the International Olympic Academy or the International Olympic Committee regarding SkillFIT.

SkillFIT aims to shift the focus in PE from competition to personal improvement. The students behind it plan to keep refining the openai tool, despite the demands of their education. For now, the project stays within their school—but its potential impact on how physical education is taught could reach far beyond.
