Researcher Tiina Üürike developed a questionnaire to define the syndrome, marking the first scientific attempt to measure the phenomenon. The findings point to potential links between this behaviour and chronic stress or burnout.
Üürike's study identifies 'good girl syndrome' as a set of traits including perfectionism, fear of failure, and consistently putting others' needs first. At its core lies conditional self-worth—where individuals tie their value to meeting external expectations. The research highlights six key components, all contributing to emotional strain and disrupted daily functioning.
The questionnaire revealed that higher scores correlated with greater psychological distress. Respondents exhibiting these traits often reported exhaustion, unmet personal goals, and unspoken concerns due to anxiety over making mistakes. While not yet a formal diagnosis, the study suggests the pattern could have clinical implications, including long-term health risks. Üürike emphasises the importance of recognising this behaviour early. She encourages those who identify with the pattern to prioritise self-awareness and set clearer boundaries. However, the study notes that further research is needed to validate the questionnaire and assess its broader relevance.
