Swiss hospital overwhelmed as record births force expectant mothers away

Baden Cantonal Hospital (KSB) is struggling to cope with a sharp rise in births. The facility recorded a 14% increase in 2025, reaching 1,937 deliveries. Now, limited bed availability has forced the hospital to turn away expectant mothers at times.

The surge in births became clear early in 2026. By January 17, KSB had already delivered its 100th baby of the year. Just two days later, that number climbed to 120.

With demand outpacing capacity, the hospital temporarily suspended admissions in January. Some pregnant women were redirected to nearby general hospitals like Aarau Cantonal Hospital, Asana Hospital Leuggern, or Limmattal Hospital. The issue stems from a 14% jump in births last year, pushing the maternity ward to its limits. No details have been released about how many mothers were transferred or which general hospitals absorbed the most cases. However, the strain on KSB's resources remains evident as staff work to manage the ongoing influx.

The hospital continues to face challenges in accommodating new mothers. Temporary admission stops and transfers to other clinics highlight the pressure on its maternity services. For now, KSB is focusing on balancing demand with the available capacity.
