Swiss train surfing deaths rise as authorities issue urgent warnings

Train surfing—a dangerous trend where people ride on the outside of moving trains—has led to multiple deaths in Switzerland this year. Authorities warn that the activity poses extreme risks, particularly from high-voltage power lines above the tracks. Four young people have already lost their lives in 2026 alone. The first fatality occurred in Langenthal, where a 14-year-old died while train surfing. Weeks later, a 17-year-old suffered the same fate in Zofingen. The incidents continued with an 18-year-old killed between Lenzburg and Beinwil am See, followed by a 19-year-old at Erstfeld station.

The Aargau region, which includes Zofingen and Lenzburg, appears especially affected. While no official figures exist for severe non-fatal injuries or previous years, the recent deaths highlight the lethal consequences of the practice. High-voltage power lines above trains carry enough electricity to kill instantly, even without direct contact. Officials strongly advise against train surfing due to its deadly risks. The four confirmed deaths in early 2026 serve as a stark warning. Avoiding the activity remains the only way to prevent further tragedies.
