Ted Turner, media pioneer who launched CNN, dies at 85
Ted Turner, the media pioneer who reshaped television news, has passed away at the age of 85. Born in Cincinnati in 1938, he built an empire that included CNN, TNT, and Cartoon Network. His bold vision transformed how the world consumed news and entertainment. Turner began his career by reviving a struggling Atlanta TV station, WTCG, in 1976. He turned it into the first 'superstation,' later renamed TBS, broadcasting nationally via satellite. His ambition didn’t stop there—just a year later, he captained the yacht Courageous to victory in the 1977 America’s Cup.
On June 1, 1980, he defied industry sceptics by launching CNN, the first 24-hour news channel. At the time, many executives doubted the idea would work. Yet CNN soon became a global leader, covering major events live, from the Challenger disaster to the September 11 attacks. Beyond news, Turner expanded his media reach with TNT, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies. His personal life also drew attention, including three marriages—most notably to actor Jane Fonda from 1991 to 2001. In 2018, he revealed a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia, a condition that gradually affects brain function.
Turner’s legacy endures through the networks he created and the industry he revolutionised. His innovations in cable television changed how people accessed news and entertainment worldwide. The impact of his work remains visible in media today.
