Teen's Cosmetic Surgery Obsession Tears Family Apart in Yakutsk

A mother from Yakutsk is struggling with her 14-year-old daughter's sudden obsession with cosmetic surgery. Polina, who now calls herself ugly, insists on getting blepharoplasty—a procedure often called 'Europeanization'—costing around 70,000 rubles. Her mother, Lyudmila, is deeply concerned and unsure how to respond. Polina's fixation on her looks began after she became fascinated with Asian idol culture. She started comparing herself to singers and now blames her parents for her appearance. In heated arguments, she has told them, 'You shouldn't have gotten married... you're both ugly, especially Dad, and now you've had kids just like you.'

Lyudmila and her husband, Afanasy, have been married for nearly 30 years. They share a strong, trusting relationship and have raised three children together. But Polina's harsh words and demands for surgery have left them shocked. *'What kind of plastic surgery at 14?!'* Lyudmila exclaimed, firmly against the idea. The family's finances add another layer of stress. Lyudmila earns about 50,000 rubles a month, while Afanasy makes slightly more. The cost of the procedure would strain their budget. Beyond money, Lyudmila believes beauty should not define a person. She values character, intelligence, kindness, and integrity far more than appearance. Now, Lyudmila is considering professional help. She wonders whether taking Polina to a psychologist might address the root of her distress.

Polina remains determined to change her looks, while her parents stand firm against surgery. The family faces difficult choices—whether to seek counselling, navigate financial pressures, or find another way to support their daughter. For now, the tension at home continues, with no easy resolution in sight.
