Text messages boost patient engagement after ER visits, study finds
A recent study has discovered that text messaging patients post-emergency department (ED) discharge can enhance health outcomes. While paper-based information frequently goes unnoticed, text alerts appear far more effective. Researchers trialed this method in two Philadelphia hospitals with encouraging results.
Patients discharged from the ED seldom engage with paper-based information. In the study, none of the participants who received printed materials made follow-up calls or enrolled in support services.
Conversely, text messaging proved far more successful. When eligible patients were sent a referral via text to a public benefits navigator, 25% responded with a call. Of those, 18% went on to enroll in at least one benefit program.
The findings align with broader research showing text messaging aids with medication adherence, symptom monitoring, and attendance at follow-up appointments. It also promotes healthier behaviors overall. However, the study did not specify how many patients at the two hospitals were originally eligible for the text message campaign.
The results underscore a clear gap between paper and digital communication in healthcare. Text messaging led to higher engagement among ED patients, with measurable outcomes in benefit enrollment. Hospitals may now consider shifting from printed materials to mobile-based follow-ups.
