In the U.S., food insecurity affects one in seven people, while diet-related chronic diseases consume nearly 90% of healthcare spending. The challenge now is balancing production with sustainability—before the system reaches breaking point.
Food production is a major contributor to climate change, responsible for roughly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. A key issue lies in energy use: transforming raw materials into food requires vast amounts at every stage, from farming to processing. Fertilizer production alone is one of the most energy-heavy steps, but new low-carbon methods could cut emissions significantly.
The strain extends beyond energy. Wildfires in 2024 scorched an area the size of Mexico, destroying millions of hectares of farmland. Healthy soils and ecosystems—often overlooked—act as agriculture's hidden foundation, supporting long-term productivity. Yet industrial farming continues to degrade water supplies, biodiversity, and soil quality at an unsustainable rate.
In the U.S., policy gaps add to the problem. No single federal body oversees energy efficiency or climate measures in food production. The Trump administration's focus on fossil fuels and deregulation has weakened climate efforts, leaving states, private companies, and market-driven solutions to fill the void. Some progress is visible—smart grids, IoT efficiency tools, and corporate investments like GE Appliances' 2024 systems—but targeted food-sector programmes remain scarce.
The health toll is equally stark. Over 70% of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, and nearly a third of adolescents now have prediabetes. Poor diets drive chronic illnesses, which dominate healthcare costs. Without systemic change, these pressures—on land, health, and resources—will only deepen.
The food system's future depends on urgent reforms in energy, land use, and policy. Decarbonising production, protecting ecosystems, and improving diets could ease pressure on both people and the planet. Without action, the risks—food shortages, rising healthcare burdens, and environmental collapse—will only grow more severe.
