Thick fog on M1 highway prompts urgent safety warnings near Barysaw

The Minsk Region's State Traffic Inspectorate has issued safety warnings due to thick fog on the M1 highway. Conditions are particularly hazardous between the 374th and 375th kilometres near Barysaw. Authorities have advised both drivers and pedestrians to take extra precautions in low visibility.

Fog creates poor visibility and makes distances harder to judge, increasing the risk of accidents. Drivers are urged to slow down, keep a greater distance from the car in front, and avoid sudden braking or lane changes. Low-beam headlights and fog lights should be used, while high beams must be switched off to prevent glare.

If visibility worsens to the point where driving becomes unsafe, motorists should pull over and turn on hazard lights. Pedestrians must cross only at designated areas, ensuring the road is clear before stepping out. Distractions like smartphones should be avoided, and reflective clothing or accessories are recommended for better visibility.

Despite the hazards, no pedestrian accidents linked to fog were recorded on this stretch of the M1 highway over the past year, from February 13, 2025, to February 13, 2026.

The inspectorate's guidelines aim to reduce risks during foggy conditions. Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to stay alert and follow safety measures. Clear communication of these rules helps maintain road safety in challenging weather.
