Daily Toothbrushing Should Reduce Tooth Decay in Kindergartens - Thuringia’s Bold Plan to Fight Child Tooth Decay in Daycares

A new statewide campaign in Thuringia is pushing for daily toothbrushing in kindergartens and daycare centers. The effort comes as concerns grow over rising tooth decay among young children. Authorities now urge all 1,400 daycare facilities to take part in improving oral hygiene habits early on.

Recent figures show nearly half of all children in Thuringia suffer from tooth decay. In 2024 alone, over 27 percent of six-year-olds needed treatment for cavities. Another 15 percent had already undergone dental restorations by that age.

To tackle the issue, 367 dentists across the region have signed on as 'sponsor dentists'. Their role includes advising daycare staff and helping children become familiar with dental care routines. The initiative also brings together preventive care specialists and local public health departments. An official appeal has gone out to every daycare provider in Thuringia. The goal is to make daily toothbrushing a standard practice in all facilities, ensuring children develop better habits from an early age.

The campaign focuses on education and prevention to reduce tooth decay rates. With dentists and health experts involved, daycare centers now have support to implement regular brushing. Officials hope the programme will lead to fewer cavities and healthier teeth for Thuringia’s youngest residents.
