Tuberculosis Case: Child in Oberspreewald-Lausitz Infected - Tuberculosis case detected in a child at a German daycare center

A four-year-old child in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district has been diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB). Health officials have stressed that the risk of transmission remains low, particularly among young children. Parents and staff at the affected daycare center in Senftenberg are now being tested as a precaution.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria, spread mainly through inhaling droplets from an infected person. The likelihood of passing it on depends on how close and how long the contact lasts. In this case, authorities have confirmed no further infections in the child's immediate environment.

The child's parents have tested negative for TB and are receiving medical care. Health experts have reassured families that young children with TB are rarely highly contagious. Over the past five years, the district has recorded only 12 confirmed cases: three in 2021, two in 2022, four in 2023, two in 2024, and one in 2025.

Without treatment, around half of those infected with TB die. However, with a four- to six-month course of antibiotics, about 85 percent of patients can be fully cured.

Testing for children and staff at the daycare center will continue as a preventive measure. Officials have urged parents to stay calm, noting that TB spreads less easily than common colds. The situation is being monitored closely, but no wider outbreak has been detected.
